The Athena SWAN Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to evaluate and improve gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

It involves a rigorous self-assessment, gathering quantitative/qualitative data on staff and students, and developing a SMART action plan to address inequalities, resulting in Bronze, Silver, or Gold awards.

The key stages of the process are as follows:

  • Data Analysis: Institutions review data on recruitment, promotion, retention, and student progression, alongside staff surveys.
  • Development of an Action Plan: A core component, the plan outlines specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound actions to address identified issues.
  • Application & Submission: Applications are submitted to Advance HE (twice a year, in April and November).
  • Award Levels:
    • Bronze: Demonstrates a solid foundation for further action.
    • Silver: Shows significant progress and impact of actions.
    • Gold: Recognizes sustained, long-term commitment and leadership in the field.

In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

About Advance HE’s Athena Swan Charter:

Athena Swan is designed to help institutions achieve their gender equality objectives. It assists institutions to meet equality legislation requirements, as well as the requirements and expectations of some funders and research councils. The process uses a targeted self-assessment framework to support applicants identify areas for positive action as well as to recognise and share good practice. It supports the promotion of inclusive working practices that can increase the retention of valued academics and professional and support staff, demonstrating an institution’s commitment to an equitable working environment.

Advance HE’s Athena SWAN Charter covers all gender identities in:

  • academic roles in STEMM and AHSSBL
  • professional and support staff
  • trans staff and students.

This is all in relation to their:

  • representation
  • progression of students into academia
  • journey through career milestones
  • working environment for all staff.
