Depression and anxiety are among the most common mental health conditions affecting higher education students, and some research indicates students may be at elevated risk relative to non-student peers of the same age, particularly linked to academic pressure, financial stress, and the transition to independent living. Unlike most other categories in this toolkit, depression and anxiety can develop, worsen, or improve within a single academic year, meaning a teacher's response needs to be flexible over time, not fixed at the start of a module.
