Dyslexia and related specific learning differences are among the most commonly under-recognised barriers in higher education, precisely because they are invisible and frequently well compensated for by the time a student reaches university. A student who has spent years developing workarounds at school can look, on the surface, entirely unaffected — until a high-pressure situation, such as a timed exam or an unexpected request to read aloud, exposes a difficulty that has been there all along.
